The much anticipated start to the 2013 football season for the Rockdale Raiders U7/8 got under way on Saturday against the Banksia Tigers.
Both sides played with great spirit and enthusiasm. The match was played at a frenetic pace. After the early exchanges It was the Raiders who broke the deadlock scoring the opening goal of the season after a slick and skilful pass from #27 set up #15 who duly riffled the ball into the top left corner of the Tigers net beating the keeper with a clinical finish. The Raiders defended their goal with true grit and determination. #10 who played the first half in goals made 4 magnificent saves and bravely put his body on the line to keep a clean sheet for the half.
The second half saw the Raiders repeal wave after wave of the Tigers attack and it was #27 in the goals who made a number of athletic saves showing not only can he set up goals but he can also stop them. #7 was the player of the match making great contributions in both attack and defence. He was unlucky not to score hitting the wood work on more than one occasion. #14 made a number of important and timely tackles at the back. #25 proved to be a handful for the opposition with his skilful ball distribution and dazzling footwork causing headaches for the Tigers defence. #16 worked hard all game chasing down opponents and causing a number of turn overs. #13 put in a whole hearted performance and gave some great passes to her team-mates.
The children were a credit to the club and thanked the Tigers for a competitive and good natured contest.
